Carcross Yukon

Carcross is a picturesque village less than an hour drive from Whitehorse. The name is an abbreviation of Caribou Crossing, so called because of its early day significance as a seasonal gathering place during caribou herd migrations. The area is also known from the “Game Mother” legend as the very important site where many different animal species were born. The rich culture and traditions of the Tlingit clans who settled in the area survive and thrive today. Many of the Yukon’s First Nations people were sent to Carcross to attend the Choutla Residential School, established in 1901 by an Anglican Bishop and closed in the 1960s.

The golden spike was set in place when the last rail was laid at Carcross on July 29, 1900 and the town has been a major depot for the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.  The spectacular narrow gauge rail line offers scenic train excursions along the first 67.5 miles of the original 110-mile route that once connected Skagway, Alaska with Whitehorse, tracing the historic Trail of ’98 which led thousands of gold-seekers from the staging grounds at Skagway to the gold fields of the Klondike. Today the railway provides passenger service through the coastal mountains between Skagway and Carcross in comfortable restored and replica coaches.  In the early part of the century. Carcross was also a supply center for the Conard Mine on Windy Arm of Tagish Lake and shipment point for freight destined by lake steamer to the gold rush town of Atlin, British Columbia.

Walking through the historic town of Carcross, visitors will see many houses from the Gold Rush era. The Caribou Hotel, famous for a rather obnoxious parrot, was built in 1900. There are two historic churches and the old Carcross Train Station is now the Tourist Info Center. Visit historic Carcross Barracks, full of antiques, curios and Yukon crafts, then drink in the famous view of Bennett Lake and walk along its scenic shore.  Be sure to visit beautiful Carcross Commons for many artisan shops, restaurant and more. The Learning Centre (Haa Shagóon Hídi - Our Ancestor’s House) offers a fascinating look at the art and history of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation people.
