The Cataldo Mission

Location: On I-90; 25 miles east of Coeur d’ Alene. Visitor Information: Old Mission State Park Phone: (208) 682-3814; Website: www.idahoparks.org

A living landmark, Old Cataldo Mission was built on a rolling hill in Idaho’s northern panhandle, the oldest standing building in the state.  This wilderness church was built between 1848 and 1853 by the “Black Robe” missionaries under the leadership of Father Anthony Ravalli for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.  The walls are a foot thick and built entirely without nails; Father Ravalli carved the statues.  There is also a restored parish house next door to the mission and an historic cemetery.  The visitor center includes an interpretive exhibit on the area and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.  A picnic area and self-guided tour of the grounds are also available.
