ALASKA MARINE HIGHWAY
The best way to plan a trip of a lifetime is to take advice from an expert. Below are some insider tips from Captain Wilkens to ignite your imagination and inspire your sense of adventure, Alaska style.
Bellingham to Ketchikan will be your opportunity to sit back and relax while the breathtaking scenery passes by. Watch the inlets and islands off the BC coast, view small Native villages and spot some of the most remote lighthouses in the Southeast.
Ketchikan to Juneau offers many similar sites but here you can expect to see more Alaska culture through totem poles and fishing vessels. This entire region is wrapped in the Tongass National Forest, the largest National Forest in the United States and the largest contiguous temperate rain forest in the world.
Have your eyes and camera ready from Juneau to Yakutat. On this leg of the trip, you will travel out to the Gulf, where whales often congregate around Point Adolphus.
If you're a history buff, plan a stop in Yakutat. A small Native village off the coast where you will be able to visit Cannon Beach and see remains of WWII canons and tanks. Downtown you'll discover the remains of a Navy WWII plane and the old railroad car and engine that brought salmon from the local rivers.
Continuing on from Yakutat to Prince William Sound, you'll have opportunities to spot whales, sea lions, other marine mammals, eagles and numerous bird species. If you plan to drive onboard, the port of Whittier will be the perfect place to connect to the main road system and continue your Alaska journey.
This summer, we have increased service from Bellingham, WA to the communities of Southeast. Car deck space is still available, so plan to drive on board and save with the drivers go FREE special on "mirror" round trips through Sept. 30.
