Alaska Marine Highway Sea News
06/07/2010 |

The Last Frontier is known around the world for its abundant and beautiful wildlife. When you take a trip on the Alaska Marine Highway, you're likely to see much of the state's marine wildlife – right from the deck of our ferries. Bring your binoculars and camera and capture these majestic animals in their natural habitat.

Alaska's coastal waters are home to whales, porpoise, seals and sea otters. But that's just the beginning of the variety of animals that live near the Marine Highway. Bald and golden eagles are attracted to the state's lush forests and salmon streams. And migratory birds such as swans, geese, ducks and terns all make Alaska wetlands their home. In fact, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has identified more than 470 species of birds making the 49th state a paradise for birders.

For good opportunities to see marine animals, start a trip in Valdez or Whittier, just south of Anchorage. And check out our routes for Kodiak Island for more options, including bear viewing or birding expeditions
